Case Study: Pro-Bono Work with Operation Smile Manila

Dr. Amelia Jardim joined Operation Smile Australia’s missions to Manila in 2023, contributing her expertise in craniofacial neurosurgery to transform the lives of children with complex conditions. In 2024, she was appointed Lead Neurosurgeon for the mission, focusing on operating on children with fronto-nasal encephaloceles; rare congenital conditions where brain tissue protrudes through the skull and facial structures.
One of her patients, 12-year-old Joshua, underwent surgery to remove a nasoethmoid encephalocele. Four days post-surgery, his face remained swollen, and sutures were still in place, but the life-changing impact of the procedure was already clear. Performed by Dr. Jardim and the dedicated team at East Avenue Medical Centre, the surgery marked a significant turning point in Joshua’s life, offering him the chance to grow up healthier and more confident.
This mission exemplified Dr. Jardim’s commitment to using her skills to provide life-altering care to children in need, leaving a lasting impact on both her patients and their families.
